Making Filmmaking Accessible Since 2014
Founded by Shameka Sawyer in 2014, the 5 Shorts Project was born from a simple yet powerful vision: to make independent filmmaking accessible to everyone. What started as a grassroots initiative in Philadelphia has grown into a nationally recognized nonprofit organization.
Over the past decade, we’ve produced over 50 short films, empowered hundreds of filmmakers to find their voice, and built a thriving community of storytellers who support each other’s creative journeys.
The Philly Emerging Filmmaker membership is our way of extending that community support to adult independent filmmakers—providing resources, connections, and opportunities to help you bring your stories to life.

What does membership cost?

Who can join?
Philly Emerging Filmmaker is open to adult independent filmmakers at all skill levels—from those just starting out to experienced creators looking for community support.
Do I need to live in Philadelphia?
While many benefits are Philadelphia-based, we welcome members from the greater Philadelphia region and surrounding areas who can participate in in-person events.
What types of films do you support?
We support all genres and styles of independent filmmaking—narrative, documentary, experimental, animation, and more. If you’re telling stories, we’re here to help.
How often do you host events?
We host monthly networking events, quarterly screenings, and regular workshops throughout the year. Members receive advance notice and priority registration.
Can I collaborate with other members?
Absolutely! Collaboration is at the heart of our community. We facilitate connections between members and maintain a crew/collaborator database.
How do I apply?
