A powerful new documentary produced by Philadelphia Youth gives voice to those impacted by gun violence, both victims and activists seeking solutions. Created through the Bout Mine I Matter program, “Full Circle” fosters conversation and community healing.
Launched in 2022, the Bout Mine I Matter program empowers teens from neighborhoods affected by gun violence to create films focused on community-based solutions. The 5 Shorts Project runs the initiative.
Participants learn documentary filmmaking skills and produce shorts uplifting diverse perspectives. The program provides a creative outlet for youth to process trauma, share stories, and envision a future of peace.
The latest film, “Full Circle,” features Bout Mine participants interviewing formerly incarcerated activists. The youth draw insights from the activists who now dedicate themselves to curbing violence.
Profiled activists include Sergio Hyland and Felix Rosado. Both men served long sentences and now advocate for rehabilitation resources and community investment.
Bout Mine participants bring their own experiences into the conversation. Amir Taylor shot at age 15, shares his journey to forgiveness and growth. Carmelo Whitehead discusses losing his brother to gun violence.
These youth come full circle through filmmaking – from victims to change makers. They demonstrate the power of uplifting diverse voices to drive solutions.
“Full Circle” forges connections across generations and experiences. Youth, survivors, and former activists sit together and imagine a more just future. The Bout Mine I Matter program continues to foster difficult but necessary community dialogues. Most importantly, it equips the next generation with tools to lead the charge.
